Kansas State Wildcats land potential impact basketball transfer from Arkansas State
After several months of searching, Jerome Tang has finally found an experienced transfer who figures to help the Kansas State men’s basketball team immediately next season.
Desi Sills, a 6-foot-1 senior guard who previously started for both Arkansas and Arkansas State, announced Tuesday that he will continue his college basketball career with the Wildcats.
He is a much-needed addition.
Not only does his presence give K-State nine scholarship players for the majority of summer workouts, it gives the Wildcats a veteran scorer who could significantly raise the team’s ceiling.
Unlike the first six newcomers who Tang recruited this spring, Sills is a known commodity at the Division I level. He has been playing in big games since 2018. He also averaged 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season at Arkansas State.
That type of production is exactly what Tang has been looking to add with K-State’s remaining open scholarships.
Sills is expected to complement Markquis Nowell, Mississippi State transfer Cam Carter and freshman Dorian Finister in the back court next season. He will compete for a spot in the starting lineup and potentially be a considered a favorite to win one.
Before playing one season at Arkansas State last year, Sills spent three seasons in the SEC at Arkansas. He played in 98 games with the Razorbacks and was in the starting lineup for 47 of them. His best season came as a sophomore when he averaged 10.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
His ability to shoot the ball from three-point range has fluctuated throughout this career. He made 46% of his threes as a freshman, but only 25.5% as a senior. He has never been much of a volume shooter. He attempted a career-high 4.5 three-pointers per game as a sophomore. That number dropped to 2.7 as a junior before climbing back up to 3.6 last season.
Sills has one year of college eligibility remaining, and Tang will try to get the most out of him during his lone season with the Wildcats.
