Kansas State Wildcats lose two linebackers to transfer portal after spring practice
The Kansas State football team lost a pair of defensive players to the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday.
Gaven Haselhorst, a 6-foot and 224-pound redshirt freshman linebacker from Hays, announced his intentions to leave the Wildcats and continue his college career elsewhere shortly after spring practice came to an end in Manhattan.
He was joined in the portal by Kienen Gaskin, a walk-on sophomore linebacker from Lee’s Summit.
Those departures will hurt K-State in terms of defensive depth as the Wildcats prepare for the 2022 season, but neither player was expected to have a meaningful role in the fall.
Haselhorst departs K-State after spending a year on the roster. The former two-star recruit didn’t see any action while he spent his first season on the sideline with a redshirt.
“I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to continue my educational and athletic career at K-State,” he wrote on social media. “I would also like to thank Coach (Chris) Klieman) and the whole K-State staff for giving me this opportunity to play the game I love. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining.”
Gaskin saw action in 10 games last season. He was used primarily on special teams, but he did see time on defense against TCU and recorded the first tackle of his career.
A handful of K-State players have opted to transfer this semester. Klieman said during his final news conference of the spring that the Wildcats will likely look to recruit new players out of the transfer portal to fill those roster holes.
