Seven ‘super seniors’ returning for extra football season with Kansas State Wildcats

The Kansas State football team will have the equivalent of seven bonus players on its roster next season.

You can call them “super seniors.”

That term was coined last season when the NCAA froze eligibility across all sports in response to the coronavirus pandemic, allowing student-athletes to play five college seasons instead of the traditional four.

Right now, seniors have a decision to make after they finish their fourth year in school. Stay or go? After pondering that question for a few weeks, seven seniors have decided to remain in school and play an extra season for the Wildcats.

Here is the list, according to K-State’s updated spring football roster:

  • Dawson Delforge (offensive line)
  • Robert Hentz (defensive tackle)
  • Eli Huggins (defensive tackle)
  • Cincere Mason (defensive back)
  • Chabastin Taylor (wide receiver)
  • Kade Warner (wide receiver)
  • Ty Zentner (punter/kicker)

That number is more than double the estimate K-State football coach Chris Klieman provided when he was asked about returning seniors last week. But he later admitted that he was likely forgetting some names, because it was hard to remember exactly how many seniors were coming back for their fifth season instead of their fourth.

In any case, having more than a dozen returning “super seniors” on the roster is welcome news for the Wildcats. Last season, they welcomed back five (Skylar Thompson, Cody Fletcher, Noah Johnson, Bronson Massie, Jahron McPherson) and all five played an important role while K-State won eight games last season.

K-State has also added four new walk-on players to its roster ahead of the start of spring practice on March 8. They are: running back Andrew Schwinn, linebacker Shadryon Blanka, defensive back Joe Hall and Air Force transfer La’James White, a running back who redshirted during his lone season with the Falcons.
