A Kansas State football player was one of two men injured during a weekend shooting at Tate’s Bar in Manhattan.

Reed Godinet, a senior walk-on defensive end from Springdale, Arkansas, suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound while inside the bar early Sunday morning and is now recovering, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Godinet and another 24-year-old male were both injured during the shooting, which took place in the Aggieville Business District near K-State campus. The Manhattan Mercury reported that Godinet was not the intended target of the shooting but tried to stop the gunman.

The other victim suffered a concussion, but both men were transported to Ascension Via Christi for treatment. Godinet was later flown to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for further care. The Mercury reported he was no longer a patient at the hospital as of Monday afternoon.

K-State officials declined comment Monday other than to confirm that a K-State student was one of the two men injured in the shooting.

“What we are able to confirm at this time is that one of the victims is a student,” Michelle Geering, public information officer for K-State, said in an email.

She directed further questions to the Riley County Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.

A spokesperson for RCPD said they had no updates to release and declined to name either of the victims. No arrests have been made.

Godinet is a 6-foot-5 and 252-pound defender who has been with the Wildcats since 2019. He has played in one game for K-State, but he hasn’t recorded any stats.

His family has a strong connection to K-State. His farther, Randall, played for the Wildcats from 1984-86, and his older brother, Taylor, served as the team’s assistant director of recruiting before leaving for his current job as the defensive line coach at Pittsburg State.

According to a RCPD news release, officers heard gunshots being fired inside Tate’s Bar at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday and arrived immediately thereafter. The victims were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The Riley County Police Department made a plea on Twitter for people to share any photos and videos of the incident.

“Specifically, any pictures or videos inside or around Tate’s leading up to, during, or immediately after the shooting,” the police department said.

In the moments following the shooting, police asked on Twitter that people to avoid the area of Aggieville. They said the shooting was not an ongoing incident.

Police also asked people to shelter in place while officers gathered more information about the shooting. About an hour later, police said those who had sheltered in place were able to leave.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Det. Janelle Compagnone at 785-537-2112, ext. 2301 or jcompagnone@rileycountypolice.org.

Students affected by the shooting were encouraged to contact K-State’s Counseling and Psychological Services at 785-532-6927 or the Office of Student Life at 785-532-5432 or via email at stulife@k-state.edu, the university said on social media Sunday.
