This Kansas State basketball player will likely redshirt as he recovers from injury
Everyone on the Kansas State men’s basketball team is excited about the season getting underway next week, but the Wildcats weren’t all smiles as they practiced on Monday.
K-State coach Bruce Weber shared some unfortunate injury news about Maximus Edwards, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard who was expected to provide backcourt depth off the bench this season.
“We had some tough news on Max,” Weber said. “He had surgery this spring at home and now (he’s dealing with a) little bit of a re-occurrence. We probably won’t have him for a while, at least.”
Weber later told The Eagle that Edwards will need to go undergo surgery to repair his injury, which will sideline him until at least January. Edwards was previously sidelined with a fractured tibia. Weber said Edwards started having pain in his leg a few weeks ago and K-State decided to “shut him down.”
There is a good chance he will choose to redshirt after he recovers and start building toward a fresh start next season.
Playing without Edwards isn’t viewed as a major setback for the Wildcats, as he was projected as the No. 7 guard on the team behind more experienced players like Mike McGuirl, Markquis Nowell, Selton Miguel, Mark Smith, Luke Kasubke and Nijel Pack. But he delivered some nice moments in a recent open scrimmage and was playing well enough to warrant limited minutes in games.
Edwards, a 6-foot-5 guard from Stratford, Conn., was a three-star recruit coming out of high school.
“I thought he could be an X-factor for us,” Weber said, “because he gives you that new modern small ball forward who can do some stuff at the hoop, run, rebound and all that stuff ... He could have given us some depth there at the position. It’s sad.”
Edwards is the second K-State player to suffer a serious injury before the start of the season. Sophomore forward Seryee Lewis will miss the year while he recovers from a torn ACL.
