Kansas State Wildcats lose key member of 2022 football recruiting class to Nebraska
Kansas State’s 2022 football recruiting class has lost one of its oldest members.
Gage Stenger, a 6-foot-2 and 205-pound athlete from Omaha, Nebraska, announced Wednesday that he has withdrawn his commitment from the Wildcats and will instead play college football at Nebraska.
Stenger originally committed to K-State in June, choosing the Wildcats over Illinois State, North Dakota, South Dakota State and Wyoming. But things changed when the Cornhuskers entered the picture and offered him a scholarship last week.
He celebrated his new commitment by sharing the words “I’m staying home” on social media.
“At this time it is best for me to announce that I will be changing my commitment from Kansas State University and will be following a new path,” Stenger said. “I would like to thank everyone involved at Kansas State for their belief in me and giving me the opportunity to play at the next level. But, with that being said, I would like to announce my commitment to the University of Nebraska.”
Stenger is a two-star recruit according to Rivals. He was expected to play linebacker at K-State, but his future position at Nebraska is undetermined.
He is eager to play for the Huskers. He told Husker Online that Nebraska has always been his dream school.
It was difficult for him to tell K-State coaches he was no longer heading to Manhattan.
“Kansas State is a great program with a great coaching staff,” Stenger told Husker Online. “They weren’t very happy about me de-committing. I wanted to be as respectful as possible and tell them ahead of time but they didn’t like the news.”
Without Stenger, the Wildcats now only have 12 members in their 2022 recruiting class.
Rivals currently ranks the recruiting class 75th nationally and eighth in the Big 12.
