PREDICTION

This game might not be a picnic for Chris Klieman and the Kansas State football team. The Arkansas State Red Wolves are one of the best teams the Wildcats have opened against in recent years and are certain to pose more of a challenge than any directional school from the FCS ranks.

They are coming off an eight-win season and are traditionally one of the strongest teams in the Sun Belt under coach Blake Anderson.

Still, this looks like a good matchup for the Wildcats. K-State coaches got to scout the Red Wolves while they played and lost 37-24 at Memphis last week, whereas Arkansas State coaches don’t fully know what to expect from K-State as it debuts new personnel and a new defensive coordinator.

K-State returns enough starters and talent on defense to contain Arkansas State on offense, especially as the Red Wolves rotate quarterbacks between Logan Bonner and Layne Hatcher. And Arkansas State has some big holes on defense, as Memphis ripped it apart for 502 yards while possessing the ball for 34 minutes, 20 seconds. This could be a particularly impressive debut for new tight end Briley Moore. The Red Wolves had all kinds of trouble defending that position last week.

The Wildcats may show some signs of rust coming off an unusual offseason, but that shouldn’t stop them from winning this game by double digits and covering the 13-point spread.

Kansas State 35, Arkansas State 21
