Kansas State announces salary reductions for Bruce Weber, Chris Klieman, other staff

Kansas State became the latest athletic department to announce salary reductions for select members of its staff Wednesday as the Wildcats look to offset the financial impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The most notable reductions will come from football coach Chris Klieman and men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber, who have both agreed to a 13% salary reduction for the upcoming fiscal year that begins on July 1.

K-State will also reduce salaries by 10% for any athletic employees making more than $150,000 per year. All employees making between $100,000 and $150,000 will see their salaries reduced by 5% for the upcoming year.

Overall, 42 different coaches and senior staff members will be effected. Those cuts are expected to save the Wildcats approximately $1.5 million.

In addition to those measures, K-State will also cut costs by reducing operating expenses by 10% across the athletic department. Those reductions should save the Wildcats approximately $2 million.

“We are in the midst of such a unique time, and I sincerely appreciate our staff and coaches taking this situation in stride and showcasing strong leadership,” K-State athletic director Gene Taylor said. “From revenue streams to competitions, a lot of unknowns remain ahead of us, and this reduction plan will allow us to focus on the needs of our programs and student-athletes. We remain confident that the return to normalcy is ahead of us and appreciate all that our coaches, staff, student-athletes, fans and supporters have done to help us through this unprecedented period.”

K-State announced its athletic salary reductions as the university announced other cost-saving measures across campus on Wednesday.

Weber is set to make $2.7 million next year, meaning he will miss out on $351,000 next year. Klieman is set to earn $2.5 million next year. He will miss out on $325,000 because of these staff reductions.
