Kansas State Wildcats among finalists for touted basketball recruit Donovan Williams

The Kansas State basketball team is one step closer to landing a recruit that Bruce Weber has coveted for months.

Donovan Williams, a four-star guard from Lincoln, Neb. and one of the top unsigned prospects in the 2020 class, listed K-State as one of the three final schools that he is considering along with Big 12 rivals Oklahoma State and Texas.

He is expected to announce his decision next week at 6 p.m. on April 13.

Williams is the top target on K-State’s recruiting board, and he has been since Weber offered him a scholarship in early January after he withdrew his commitment from Nebraska.

Weber made several trips to Lincoln to watch Williams play during his senior season and watched him score 44 points on one occassion.

Williams also received recruiting interest from Kansas, Villanova, Texas A&M and Georgia, but none of those teams offered him a scholarship. He is now focused solely on the three schools that have recruited him the longest.

Last month, Williams said K-State has recruited him harder than any other school.

“I could see myself going there and playing right away and making an immediate impact on both ends of the court. They probably show the most love of any school in terms of calling me and sending me letters. They probably send three or four letters a week and they are all hand-written. If they are taking time out of their day to do that then that just shows how much they care.”

But he has given no indication on which way he is leaning. Williams has also spoken fondly of Texas and Oklahoma State.

Williams, a 6-foot-5 scorer, was recently named Mr. Basketball in Nebraska.

K-State has one scholarship available to use during this recruiting cycle following the transfer of point guard David Sloan. Williams is the Wildcats’ top target, as he could provide a scoring punch after they lost eight players from last year’s roster.
