Southeast Missouri hires K-State basketball assistant Brad Korn as new head coach

After spending the past four seasons as an assistant on Bruce Weber’s coaching staff at Kansas State, Brad Korn is ready to make the jump to head coach.

The Southeast Missouri Redhawks, of the Ohio Valley Conference, hired Korn to lead their basketball program Monday.

“Brad is a winner and has an incredible knack for building relationships with student-athletes, while developing them both on and off the court,” Southeast Missouri athletic director Brady Barke said in a statement. “His energy and passion will bring a renewed sense of excitement to SEMO Basketball.”

Korn agreed to a five-year contract that will run through Apr. 30, 2025. He will be formally introduced during an internet stream Tuesday.

The Wildcats experienced three winning seasons with Korn on their coaching staff. He was also director of basketball operations during Weber’s first season in Manhattan when the team shared a Big 12 championship with Kansas.

Over the past four years, the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times and shared a Big 12 championship with Texas Tech in 2019.

Korn played for Weber at Southern Illinois and then spent eight seasons with the Salukis as an assistant coach working under current K-State associate head coach Chris Lowery.

He also previously worked as an assistant coach at Missouri State.

“I’m just super excited for Brad on earning this well-deserved opportunity to become the head coach at SE Missouri State,” Weber said in a statement. “Obviously, I have known him for a long time, having recruited him to Southern Illinois, and then hiring him twice at K-State, so I have seen his growth first hand and how he has worked his way up and paid his dues to get this chance.”

“He has really developed and matured as a coach since we hired him back in 2016 (as an assistant coach) after his time at Missouri State. He is really good with the players and in recruiting, is great with the X’s and O’s and has all the qualities to be a great head coach.”

Korn replaces Rick Ray after the Redhawks only won seven games this past season.

His departure means K-State has an opening on its coaching staff for the second straight season. The Wildcats lost former assistant Chester Frazier to Virginia Tech last spring.
