Athletic Kansas State freshman announces plans to transfer from football team
One of the most promising young athletes on the Kansas State football team has decided to continue his college career elsewhere.
Chris Herron, a 6-foot-2 freshman quarterback/receiver from Houston, announced on Thursday his plans to transfer away from the Wildcats.
“First and foremost I want to thank God for the opportunity I was given to play the game that I truly love,” Herron wrote on social media. “I also want to thank Kansas State University for giving me the chance to play at the next level in the college football world. Unfortunately, I will be parting ways with this university and entering the transfer portal. I am officially opening my recruitment once again.”
Herron was recruited to K-State by former coach Bill Snyder with hopes of playing quarterback, and he began summer workouts preparing to throw passes for the Wildcats. But as time went on, Chris Klieman moved Herron to receiver because the team lacked depth at the position.
It was unclear if K-State’s plan was for Herron to return to quarterback or stay at receiver in future seasons.
Receiver is where Herron spent the majority of his freshman season in Manhattan. Herron showed enough promise at the position to appear in a few games while maintaining his redshirt. K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson targeted him in multiple games and handed him the ball on an end-around run Herron turned into a 1-yard gain against TCU.
Herron can return to the field with another FBS team at the start of the 2021 season following a year on the sideline, per NCAA transfer rules. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
