K-State notes: Bruce Weber says point guard Jevon Thomas is off team for now

Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber did not elaborate on why sophomore guard Jevon Thomas did not make the trip to Texas on Saturday, but he did say Thomas’ playing status is uncertain.

At this moment, Weber said Thomas was not a member of the team.

“I just made my decision,” Weber said. “He has to stay focused and do what he is supposed to be doing. If he wants to come back to the team, he has got to come talk to us and we will make a decision.”

Thomas seemed surprised by Weber’s statement, writing on Twitter that he learned he was no longer part of the team on social media. He quickly deleted the tweet.

Fellow point guard Nigel Johnson was optimistic about Thomas returning to the team, saying he expected him to play against TCU.

Senior forward Nino Williams will re-join the team on Monday after missing Saturday’s game for personal reasons.

In the field

If it was up to Weber, Texas would be a lock for the NCAA Tournament.

“Texas should be in the NCAA Tournament,” Weber said. “It would be a crime if they are not. Look at a team like Wisconsin in the Big Ten. They only played one team in the top seven twice; our league is so much better. It is the No. 1 league; you are playing everybody twice.

“Wisconsin is a really good team, but I know this: If you have to play the top teams in your league twice it is going to take a toll on you. Texas deserves to be in it. We should have at least seven.”
