The Big 12 men’s basketball tournament got in one day’s worth of games in March before the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. So the league has added a year to the contract.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced on Friday that the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will remain in Kansas City through 2025.

Sprint Center is home of the men’s event. The women were to return to Municipal Auditorium this year for the first time since 2012. But no games were played because of the shutdown. The women’s event is now set for Municipal for the next five years.

“We were all looking forward to having our basketball championships back together in Kansas City in 2020,” Bowlsby said. “While the pandemic didn’t allow that to happen, this extension provides an additional year for our institutions and fans to take part in the Big 12 basketball atmosphere that has become synonymous with Kansas City.”

The men’s tournament was played at Sprint Center for the first time in 2008 and has been held there every year since 2010.
