Northwest Missouri finishes off regular football season undefeated
Northwest Missouri State is no stranger to the Division II postseason, and the Bearcats seemed to be primed for another run in the playoffs after finishing off an undefeated regular season with a 49-13 victory over Washburn in Topeka.
The Bearcats improved to 11-0.
Northwest Missouri quarterback Brady Bolles had a field day, throwing for 402 yards and three touchdowns while completing all but eight of his 39 attempts.
Shawn Bane was Bolles’ favorite target. Bane finished with 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.
Washburn quarterback Derek McGinnis threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns.
Other area highlights
▪ Emporia State quarterback had a huge day in the Hornets’ 52-34 home win over Nebraska-Kearney. Wilson threw for 535 yards and five touchdowns. Emporia State’s Brent Kavaski Ervin caught five of those passes for 125 yards and two scores.
▪ Pittsburg State fell into an early hole and wasn’t able to recover against Central Oklahoma. The Gorillas lost at home 49-31. Pitt State quarterback Thomas LePage threw for 170 yards and ran for 80 yards. Levi Copelin hauled in a 99-yard touchdown pass from LePage.
▪ Fort Hays State beat Central Missouri 28-14 in Hays, Kan. Fort Hays State running back Shaquill Cooper rushed for 158 yards. Fort Hays quarterback Treveon Albert ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more. Central Missouri’s Garrett Fugate threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns.
▪ Missouri Western routed Missouri Southern 63-21 in St. Joseph, Mo. Raphael Spencer ran for 128 yards and a touchdown for Missouri Western. Josh Caldwell had 121 rushing yards and two scores in the win.
▪ Baker nearly frittered away a 31-7 lead before stopping the bleeding with a touchdown in the game’s final minute to hold off Evangel 38-35 in Springfield, Mo. Adonis Powell ran for 177 yards and the game-clinching score. Nick Marra threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns, while Clarence Clark had four catches for 117 yards and two scores for Baker.
▪ Benedictine’s season ended on a tough 19-17 loss. Peru State’s Greg Conroy drilled a 38-yard field goal on the game’s final play in Peru, Neb. Benedictine quarterback Jacob Koester threw for 165 yards in the loss. Christian Haack caught nine passes for 95 yards for the Ravens.
▪ Jakob Jordan found Wesley Foryoh with a 12-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter as MidAmerica Nazarene beat Missouri Valley 16-13 in Olathe. The Pioneers’ Javon Taylor ran for 158 yards and a touchdown. Missouri Valley quarterback Dominic Hill threw for 136 yards.
▪ Southwest Baptist built a commanding 49-0 halftime lead and went on to a 55-13 home win over Lincoln. Trent Edwards threw for 279 yards and five touchdowns for Southwest Baptist. Bubba Jenkins ran for 145 yards for Southwest Baptist.
▪ Truman State fell at McKendree (Ill.) 31-3. Truman State quarterback Randy Schroeder threw for 107 yards.
▪ Missouri S&T had no trouble finding the end zone and the defense provided just enough resistance for a 42-35 home win over Quincy (Ill.) Tyler Swart threw for 248 yards and four touchdowns for Missouri S&T. Ray Mullen caught two of Swart’s TD passes.
▪ Avila rallied with six points in the fourth quarter and won at Central Methodist 10-6.
