Area colleges: Northwest Missouri clinches MIAA title

Northwest Missouri is the champion of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association once again.

The Bearcats had 512 yards of offense in a 44-10 victory over Emporia State in Maryville, Mo., and clinched the MIAA title with the win.

The Bearcats improved to 10-0, while Emporia State fell into a second-place tie with Central Missouri at 8-2.

Brady Bolles completed 24 of 32 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns against the Hornets. Bolles’ main target was Shawn Bane, who had seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Collin Bevins had seven tackles for Northwest Missouri, including a safety.

Other area highlights

▪ Missouri Western won the ground game in a big way at Nebraska-Kearney. The result was a 34-17 victory that included career-high days for two Missouri Western running backs. Raphael Spencer ran for 251 yards in 31 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Teammate Josh Caldwell had 153 yards rushing in 19 carries with two TDs of his own. Meanwhile, Missouri Western held Nebraska-Kearney to 25 yards rushing in 28 carries.

▪ Central Missouri got a 70-yard touchdown run from Ian Toalson in the first quarter and a fumble return of 33 yards for a score by Josh Powell fourth quarter on way to a 34-6 home win over Pittsburg State.

▪ Washburn scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns in rallying for a 35-21 win over Northeastern (Okla.) State in Tahlequah, Oka. The Ichabods defense held the RiverHawks to 19 yards of offense in the second half and -28 yards rushing for the game. Washburn had 10 tackles for loss for 51 yards.

▪ Treveon Albert passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns for Fort Hays State in a 42-31 victory at Missouri Southern.

▪ Hunter Wells threw three touchdowns as Youngstown State rolled over Missouri State 47-7 in Youngstown, Ohio. Missouri State’s only score came with 42 seconds left in the first half on a 20-yard pass from Brodie Lambert to Zac Hoover. The Bears are 1-8.

▪ Baker improved to 9-1 on the season with a 26-0 win at Missouri Valley. Baker held Missouri Valley to 97 yards of offense.

▪ Benedictine lost a defensive battle on Saturday, falling to Grand View (Iowa) 10-0 in Atchison, Kan. Christian Haack caught 10 passes for 92 yards.

▪ Avila stopped Evangel on a fourth-down play from Avila’s 1-yard line and came away with a 34-27 victory at home. Avila led 20-0 at the half. Alyn Jackson had 235 yards rushing in 30 carries for Avila.

▪ Brandon Womack kicked a 30-yard game-winning field goal as time expired, giving William Jewell a 34-31 win over Lincoln in Jefferson City. It is Womack’s third game-winning field goal this season.

▪ MidAmerica Nazarene ran to a 52-20 win over Central Methodist in Fayette, Mo. Javon Taylor led the Pioneers with 165 yards rushing in 32 carries with two touchdowns. The Pioneers as a team gained 400 yards on the ground.

▪ Truman State came up with three fourth-quarter turnovers and held on for a 10-3 home win over St. Joseph’s (Ind.)
