Northwest Missouri, Pittsburg State share MIAA crown

Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State shared the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association football title after each took victories Saturday.

Both teams finished the regular season 10-1.

Northwest Missouri beat Washburn 31-14 in Maryville, Mo., in a game that was originally scheduled for Arrowhead Stadium. But the game was moved ahead of a snowstorm that never materialized.

Still, the Bearcats took full advantage of the unexpected home game.

Phil Jackson ran for 101 yards, and Brady Bolles threw for 113 yards and a touchdown. Washburn quarterback Zeke Palmer threw for 145 yards and two scores.

The Northwest Missouri defense scored a touchdown and held Washburn to 178 yards.

Meanwhile, in Edmond, Okla., Pitt State won its 12th MIAA title when it rolled past Central Oklahoma 41-14. Anthony Abenoja threw for 290 yards and a touchdown.

Either Northwest or Pitt State has won or shared all but three MIAA titles since 1989.
