Swing the batThe third and fifth innings highlighted WSU’s miserable offensive day. The Shockers put two runners on with no outs in both and didn’t score.
WSU coach Todd Butler elected not to bunt with No. 2 hitter Garrett Bayliff in either situation. He didn’t second-guess his decision after Bayliff flew out to center in the third and bounced into a pitcher-started double play in the fifth. Bayliff, hitting .276, is 0 for 7 in the series.
“If we bunt, they’re going to walk Gillaspie,” Butler said. “I would still do it again, because Gillaspie is our best hitter and we want him up there with runners on.”
The Shockers went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and 2 for 15 with runners on base.
On their wayEight WSU seniors will suit up at Eck Stadium for the final time on Sunday.
Pitcher Cale Elam won Friday’s game. The others are shortstop Dayne Parker, infielder Erik Harbutz, outfielders Micah Green and Garrett Bayliff and pitchers Aaron LaBrie, Foster Vielock and Drew Palmer.
The seniors will be recognized at 12:40 p.m. Sunday.
Worth notingLightning in the area delayed the game for 45 minutes, before the fifth inning … Former Cleveland and Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel, now assistant to the general manager for the Phillies, scouted the series, likely taking a close look at Shocker first baseman Casey Gillapsie … WSU sophomore Daniel Kihle walked twice, his first walks since April 8 against Kansas State. He had walked four times in 31 games entering Saturday … WSU leads the series 7-2 and 6-2 at Eck Stadium … Patriots third baseman Nash Knight drove in a season-high four runs with his 2-for-4 day. Knight was hitting .212 on an 0-for-17 streak entering Saturday.
