There’s a whole lot of shakin’ up goin’ on in The Associated Press college football poll, and Kansas State and Missouri were two of the teams that moved up.

For the first time in the 78-year history of the AP poll, five of the top eight teams went down in a single regular-season week. Kansas State, which was ranked 23rd, jumped to 17th after its 45-13 victory over Texas Tech in Manhattan, Kan. Missouri didn’t play but still went from No. 24 to 23rd.

Just about the only thing that didn’t change this week was the top spot. Florida State beat Wake Forest 43-3 and is still No. 1, with 35 first-place votes. Auburn, the only other team in the top six to win, moved up three spots to No. 2 and received 23 first-place votes.

It’s a big week for the state of Mississippi. Southeastern Conference rivals Mississippi and Mississippi State are tied for third in the poll. It’s the first time the Rebes and Bulldogs have been together in the top five. This is Mississippi State’s best ranking ever. The previous best was No. 7 in 1981.

Baylor rounds out the top five, with Notre Dame at No. 6.

No. 2 Oregon dropped 10 spots after losing 31-24 at home to Arizona on Thursday night.

LSU, which lost 41-7 to Auburn, saw its streak of 87 straight poll appearances snapped. It was the second-longest active streak behind Alabama, which is up to 105 in a row.

The coaches’ poll had Florida State, Auburn, Baylor, Ole Miss and Notre Dame in the top five. Mississippi State was sixth.

Kansas State is No. 16 in the coaches’ poll, and Missouri is No. 24.
