A day after leading Northwest Missouri State to the NCAA Division II football championship, Northwest Missouri State coach Adam Dorrel has been named the new coach at Abilene Christian.

Dorrel will leave the Bearcats after six seasons, the latest capped by Saturday’s 29-3 victory over North Alabama in the national title game at Children’s Mercy Park.

It was Northwest’s second straight and sixth Division II football championship, the third for Dorrel. He took over the program in June 2011 after Scott Bostwick died of a heart attack. Bostwick had been named to succeed Mel Tjeerdsma, the legendary Bearcats coach who had won three NCAA titles.

Dorrel went 76-8 at Northwest Missouri. He inherits a Football Championship Subdivision program that went 2-9 last season. Abilene Christian transitioned from Division II to FCS after the 2012 season.

Dorrel will be introduced at a 10 a.m. news conference on Monday.
