Royals starter Edinson Volquez wants to stay in Kansas City for the long haul
A day after the Royals spoiled what was otherwise a solid day for starter Edinson Volquez, who allowed one run across six innings, he professed his desire to stay in Kansas City for the long-term.
Major League Baseball’s August 1 trade deadline is approaching, and even Volquez’s friends and family have been asking if he’s going to be included in a trade package out of the city. On Monday, Royals general manager Dayton Moore said no one on the team is off-limits.
“I got a couple calls from friends and family, talking about that,” Volquez said. “I’m not worried about it. I want to be a Royal. Like I say, you can’t control that. The only thing I can control is going over there and pitching every fifth day. It’s part of the business and whatever happens, happens.”
Volquez hopes his career’s conclusion comes in Kansas City.
“I don’t know. I got to talk to Dayton (Moore). I want to,” Volquez said. “It’s hard. It’s hard to go. Because we won the World Series last year and you feel like you’re part of this city. This is your hometown now. And that’s what we want. I think every single guy here wants to be here for the rest of their career.”

Royals taking it “day to day” with Lorenzo Cain
After 21 games off the field, outfielder Lorenzo Cain has no rehab assignment date yet. But he did go through batting practice Monday before the Royals’ series-opening game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Since June 28 against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cain has been out of the lineup due to a hamstring strain.
Manager Ned Yost and the Royals are just “going day to day” with Cain’s potential rehab assignment, and nothing has been decided. As of Monday, Cain hadn’t suffered significant setback after testing the hamstring on Sunday.
“He was out here today — I just saw him in the cage,” Yost said before Monday’s game. “He was sweating his tail off, so (that) must mean he got a lot of good work in. He’s back out here for batting practice so sounds like it’s all good.”
Royals send Daniel Stumpf to Class AA
The Royals sent left-handed pitcher Daniel Stumpf to Class AA Northwest Arkansas on Monday. Stumpf cleared waivers following a stint with the Philadelphia Phillies, who took him from the Royals in December’s Rule 5 draft.
Stumpf allowed nine hits and six earned runs in just five innings pitched for the Phillies. He served an 80-game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs this season.
