Lorenzo Cain sits, Billy Butler plays first for Royals in Oakland

A few lineup notes, as the Royals open a three-game series with the Athletics:

1. Lorenzo Cain has the day off. The team flew into San Francisco around 1:30 a.m. local time on Friday morning, and manager Ned Yost wanted to let Cain rest his legs.

2. Billy Butler will start at first base. Salvador Perez could play there on Saturday.

3. Yost does not expect to add another hitter to replace injured first baseman Eric Hosmer until Tuesday in Arizona. Jason Vargas will claim Hosmer’s roster spot on Saturday.

Here are the lineups as Jeremy Guthrie (6-9, 4.70 ERA) faces Sonny Gray (12-3, 2.65 ERA):
