Lenexa boxer Cam F. Awesome is one bout away from making Olympic team
A local boxer is one step away from qualifying for the Olympics.
Cam F. Awesome of Lenexa beat DeRae Crane by a 3-0 decision on Wednesday in the 201-pound (heavyweight) division at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Reno, Nev.
Awesome, who was previously known as Lenroy “Cameron” Thompson, on Saturday will face Joshua Temple, Brandon Glanton or Crane with a chance to win a spot on the U.S. team for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Should Awesome lose, he will have a chance to box again Sunday.
In 2012 Awesome was suspended by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which said that over an 18-month period he failed three times to meet requirements for his whereabouts so he could be found for out-of-competition drug testing.
