Rory McIlroy Set to Avoid Punishment After Travellers Championship Decision

Rory McIlroy is undoubtedly a fan favorite golfer on the PGA Tour in recent years. However, for the Northern Irish golfer, instead of chasing glory in every tournament, he has built his schedule around the four majors in a season. McIlroy's latest decision regarding his season has emerged during the ongoing 2026 U.S. Open.

The 37-year-old is set to miss the Travelers Championship, which is the final signature event of the PGA Tour season. McIlroy has only competed in nine tournaments this season, including the ongoing major. He also missed other signature events such as the Cadillac Championship and the RBC Heritage.

As per the PGA Tour's rulebook, fully exempted members must compete in at least 15 official tournaments each season. Players who fail to meet that mark without an approved medical exemption or waiver can face suspension, fines, or miss out on end-of-season benefits. However, McIlroy has escaped punishment since he is a lifetime PGA Tour member after collecting 30 career wins.

The veteran golfer reached that milestone earlier this year, winning the 2026 Masters to retain his Green Jacket and capture his sixth major title. McIlroy's recent schedule highlights his increasing focus on major championships and the most important tournaments rather than playing a full regular-season calendar. Now, he is set to miss next week's Travelers Championship.

McIlroy has never really found much success at TPC River Highlands. He has never won that event, and his best result came last year when his 5-under-par performance earned him a tie for sixth place. Amid all the drama over his decision to skip the Travelers Championship, McIlroy's current priority remains winning the U.S. Open for the first time since his 2011 victory.

After a +1 second round, he currently sits tied for 11th position at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The decent round has helped him stay in contention. However, more drama followed, as he was asked about the PGA Tour's latest proposal, which introduces two separate tournament tracks. As per the suggested 2028 model, players compete to stay in the top level while others fight for promotion.

McIlroy expressed concerns about the idea, suggesting that some historic tournaments could lose importance if they cannot secure larger financial commitments from sponsors. Regardless of what happens on the PGA Tour, McIlroy's determination to win majors will remain unchanged.
