Falcons Quarterback Battle May Already Have Early Favorite

Atlanta Falcons first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski has a big decision to make before the 2026 NFL season begins. There's a quarterback battle brewing between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa was brought in this offseason, signing a one-year, $1.2 million contract. He's the challenger in this competition, going up against Penix, who the Falcons selected with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The former top 10 pick has struggled to stay healthy, having yet to start at least 10 games in a season. With Atlanta playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 on Sept. 13, there's still plenty of time for a winner to be selected.

However, Stefanski and his staff have already gotten a better look at the former Alabama Crimson Tide during OTAs. With mandatory minicamp beginning on Tuesday, ESPN's Marc Raimondi reports that Tagovailoa may have a head start.

"Tagovailoa has been able to do everything, and Stefanski is on record saying he believes accuracy is the most important trait for a quarterback, something Tagovailoa historically has had in abundance," Raimondi wrote. "None of this means Tagovailoa will for sure win the job, especially if Penix impresses in training camp. But Tagovailoa might have something of a head start in this new offense."

Last season, the former Miami Dolphin threw for 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and an 88.5 passer rating. He struggled on the field, but could benefit from a change of scenery.

Stefanski has spoken highly of Tagovailoa since signing with the Falcons, calling his accuracy "an innate, God-given" ability. Since making his debut in 2020, the one-time Pro Bowler has completed 68% of his passes.

With minicamp still ahead, the competition is far from decided. However, early indicators suggest that Tagovailoa has positioned himself as a real threat to win the starting spot.
