F1 Announces Punishment for George Russell at Monaco GP
George Russell has been handed a five-second time penalty during the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix for speeding in the pit lane, adding to what has already been a chaotic race in Monte Carlo.
The penalty was confirmed during the Formula 1 race live broadcast, with Russell joining a growing list of drivers to face stewards' action on the streets of Monaco. A five-second penalty at Monaco is particularly damaging given the near-impossibility of making up time or positions on track.
Russell was not alone. Lewis Hamilton received an identical five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane just minutes before his former Mercedes teammate and current rival was handed the same punishment. Both drivers falling foul of the pit lane speed limit within the same race is a significant development, with the penalties set to impact their final race classifications.
The pit lane speed limit infringement is one of the more straightforward offences in Formula 1; teams and drivers are fully aware of the limit, making the double penalties all the more costly on a day where both drivers had been running strongly in the top five.
Monaco Grand Prix Chaos Continues
Monaco has already claimed Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas, Oliver Bearman, and Lando Norris as retirements. At the same time, Sergio Perez has effectively had his afternoon ruined by the early drive-through penalty, currently sitting in 17th. It is shaping up to be one of the most incident-packed Monaco Grands Prix in recent memory.
Not the start Max wanted at all!

At lap 48 of 78, Kimi Antonelli continues to lead for Mercedes. Hamilton sits 19.8 seconds behind in second, though his five-second penalty will factor into his final classification. Leclerc is third, 7.8 seconds further back.
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri has moved up to fourth for McLaren, with George Russell fifth for Mercedes despite his own pending penalty. Isack Hadjar holds sixth for Red Bull, with Pierre Gasly seventh for Alpine.
