Jaxson Dart Defends 'Unique Opportunity' With President Trump
One week after introducing President Donald Trump at a rally, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart spoke to the media about his political beliefs.
Dart, who had 2,272 passing yards, 487 rushing yards and 24 total touchdowns during his rookie season, received plenty of backlash for introducing Trump at a campaign event at Rockland Community College. He was even called out by Giants pass rusher Abdul Carter.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, the Giants had Dart address his teammates in a meeting on Wednesday.
"Other team leaders spoke up as well, and Dart and the players worked through it," Garafolo said. "They are moving forward."
While at the Giants' facility this Friday afternoon, Dart met with reporters to discuss why he introduced Trump at last week's event.
"This was a unique opportunity. You know, being asked and given the opportunity to introduce the President of the United States, you know, my thinking was pretty simple. And the fact of, you know, I've always loved this country. I have extended family members who have fought in wars. I have two uncles who have retired from the Air Force Academy, and served themselves. And I have a great grandfather who served as Secretary of Treasury at some point. So the president position has always been a position that I have always respected, regardless of political affiliation, regardless of political party, and my intentions were just that," Dart told reporters.
"I also understand in this world, politics can be a sensitive matter, a sensitive topic. I also understand that I am the quarterback of the New York Giants, and that involves a lot of responsibility. It's under a limelight, under a microscope, and there's a lot that comes with that, and it's been something that I've embraced. ... Most importantly, I can honestly say that I love every single one of my brothers, my teammates on this team regardless of politics, regardless of religious beliefs, regardless of anything that may be different between us. Like, I love them and they know exactly what kind of person that I am, who comes into the facility every day."
NFL fans defend Jaxson Dart.
While there are plenty of Giants fans annoyed with Dart, several people came to his defense this Friday.
"Why does he have to explain anything? Everyone has the freedom to support whoever they want politically," one fan said.
"Well done young man!! If you can't respect him, the problem is with you, not with him," a second fan wrote.
"I don't care how you feel about Politics he should not have to apologize for something he wants to do," another NFL fan declared.
Suffice to say, the debate surrounding Dart is far from over.
