Victor Wembanyama Draws Crazy Stephen Curry Parallel In Spurs' Game 4 Win
History repeated itself in San Antonio on Sunday night.
The NBC broadcast crew caught San Antonio Spurs supernova center Victor Wembanyama listening intently to head coach Mitch Johnson, and then panned directly to Spurs legends Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich - San Antonio’s defining head coach and big man of old - engaged in a similar dynamic in their suite.
But that’s not what I’m talking about.
Wembanyama scored 33 points on 11-for-22 shooting from the field - 22 points coming in the first half - and posted eight rebounds, five assists, four turnovers, three blocks, and two steals in the Spurs’ 103-82 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. San Antonio’s victory evened the Western Conference Finals at 2-2.
WarriorsMuse, a Golden State Warriors-dedicated StatsMuse account, noted that Wembanyama’s performance was identical to Stephen Curry‘s masterpiece in leading the Warriors to a 101-84 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals, evening the series at 2-2.
On May 11, 2015, Curry scored 33 points on 11-for-22 shooting from the floor - 21 points coming in the first half - and posted eight rebounds, five assists, four turnovers, and two steals.
The Warriors went on to oust the Grizzlies in six games before defeating the Houston Rockets in five in the Western Conference Finals. Golden State topped the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 NBA Finals to win the first of four championships for head coach Steve Kerr and the Curry-Klay Thompson-Draymond Green triumvirate.
All of San Antonio would love for Wembanyama’s Game 4 gem to forecast that fate for Johnson and the emerging triumvirate of Wemby, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper.
The one notable difference between the 2015 Warriors and the 2026 Spurs is that the Warriors did not have to go through the defending champions, which were, ironically, the Spurs. Wembanyama and these Spurs are in a heavyweight fight with the Thunder. Game 5 is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET Tuesday night in Oklahoma City, with the game airing on NBC.
