Mets Accomplish Something They Haven't Done in Nearly Two Years

The New York Mets pulled off something on Sunday that they haven't done in nearly two years.

After rallying to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and winning in the next frame, the Mets' stunning 7-6 win over the New York Yankees this afternoon ended a baffling 0-91 stretch when trailing after eight innings since the start of last season.

Entering the bottom of the ninth down 6-3, the Mets looked dead in the water, especially after Mark Vientos struck out with two runners on in the frame, resulting in the Mets being down to their last out. But on the very next pitch, Tyrone Taylor took Yankees closer David Bednar deep with a three-run homer, knotting the game at six.

And after Devin Williams put up a scoreless tenth inning, Carson Benge provided his second walk-off RBI on this homestand for the Mets, winning the game 7-6 and capping off a 5-1 homestand for the Amazins.'

To put this dramatic win in perspective for the Mets, it was the first time the ballclub won a game trailing after eight innings since Game 3 of the 2024 NL Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. In that game, former Met Pete Alonso clubbed the go-ahead and ultimately series-clinching three-run homer off the aforementioned Devin Williams in the top of the ninth inning. Sunday's winning pitcher for the Mets, by the way... Devin Williams.

This win was certainly a memorable one for the Mets and one they most desperately needed, especially after this series win over the Yankees was marred by an injury in the first game. The Mets lost perhaps their best starting pitcher, Clay Holmes, to a fractured fibula, which is expected to keep him out for at least two months.

The Mets have now also not lost a series to their cross-town rivals at Citi Field since 2018 and have won nine out of their last 13 Subway Series games.

New York is now 20-26 on the season and will look to keep the momentum going when they begin a seven-game roadtrip beginning on Monday against the Washington Nationals.
