Mariners Turn to Top Prospect Colt Emerson Amid Injury Shakeup

The future for the Seattle Mariners is here.

The Mariners are calling up their top prospect, shortstop Colt Emerson, according to Ryan Divish. In a corresponding move, Seattle is placing Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain.

Emerson, 20, is the sixth-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Seattle selected him with the No. 22 pick in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft.

Emerson was set to bat second in Triple-A Tacoma's lineup today. A couple of hours later, the team scratched him.

Instead, Emerson will make his major league debut tonight on Sunday Night Baseball against the San Diego Padres. He is set to play third base and bat ninth.

In 38 minor league games this season, Emerson slashed .255/.347/.469 with seven home runs and 10 stolen bases. At just 20 years old, Emerson has shown advanced skills for his age. He already looks like a future cornerstone.

Talk of Emerson making his major league debut this season started to gain traction in spring training. In 41 at-bats, Emerson hit .268 with five home runs.

The bad news for the Mariners is losing Donovan, who has been great in his first season with Seattle. Donovan is batting .274 with a .386 on-base percentage and three home runs while playing third base.

Emerson is a shortstop by trade. But with J.P. Crawford already there, the Mariners have been reluctant to hand him the job. For now, Emerson will play third base every day. If he thrives before Donovan returns, he could eventually push Crawford for the starting shortstop role.

This is the second major loss for the Mariners in just a few days. Seattle also placed Cal Raleigh on the injured list with an oblique strain.

The Mariners have underperformed compared to expectations, especially after reaching the American League Championship Series last season. They hope Emerson can help get them back on course and bring more thump to the offense.

Emerson will make his major league debut tonight against the Padres at 4:20 p.m. PT.
