Juan Soto in Mets Lineup After Exiting Game Last Night

New York Mets fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

After exiting New York's win against the Detroit Tigers last night, Juan Soto is back in the lineup today for the Mets, DHing and batting third.

Soto fouled a pitch off his ankle during Wednesday's game in the bottom of the third inning and was visibly in pain. Despite finishing the at-bat and taking another in the bottom of the sixth inning, the 27-year-old was ultimately replaced by MJ Melendez in the next frame.

This news should also not come as much of a surprise, as the Mets seemingly dodged a massive bullet after the X-rays of Soto's ankle came back negative.

Soto's second season in Flushing has not been a great one to this point. He was placed on the injured list for just the second time in his career after suffering a right calf strain in San Francisco and was forced to miss 15 games.

When Soto eventually returned to the Mets, he was used primarily as their DH, citing the need to keep his bat in the lineup with New York's offense at the bottom of the league in almost every offensive category. Soto is also in the midst of an offensive rut, going just 3-for-22 over his last six games.

The Mets' putrid offense is also due to the team missing a big chunk of their starting lineup. They're without Francisco Lindor (left calf strain), Jorge Polanco (Achilles) and Luis Robert Jr. (lumbar disc herniation), and most recently, Francisco Álvarez, who was placed on the IL on Wednesday with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Despite those injuries, New York has been able to piece together some victories, winning six of its last 10 and taking the first two games of its series against the aforementioned Tigers. The Mets are aiming for their first sweep of the season this afternoon with ace Nolan McLean on the mound for them.
