Donovan Mitchell's Historic Night Draws Major Praise From Magic Johnson

Donovan Mitchell gave the Cavaliers exactly what they needed, and Magic Johnson made sure to give him his flowers afterward. With Cleveland trying to even its second-round series against the Pistons, Mitchell exploded for 39 points in the second half, tying an NBA playoff record and powering the Cavs to a 112-103 win.

He finished with 43 points overall and nearly broke Eric "Sleepy" Floyd's long-standing mark from 1987, missing the record-breaking free throw in the final seconds. Still, the performance was more than enough to grab Magic's attention, with the Lakers legend calling Mitchell unstoppable after a historic night.

Johnson took to X following the game to say, "Cavs superstar Donovan Mitchell tied an NBA postseason record for most points in a single half by scoring 39 points - 21 of those were in the 3rd quarter alone! He was unstoppable, finishing with 43 points in the Cavs win tonight to tie the Series."

Donovan Mitchell Comes up Big to Level the Series

Game 4 may end up being the night this series truly changed.

The Cavaliers looked buried after the first two games in Detroit, but after two wins in Cleveland, this matchup is now even and suddenly feels wide open. The biggest reason is simple: Donovan Mitchell delivered the kind of performance that shifts pressure across the entire series.

For one half, Mitchell was quiet. Then he came out after the break and completely took over. His second-half burst was not just hot shooting. It was total control. He forced contact, attacked gaps, punished switches, and made Detroit's defense look like it was guessing on every possession.

Cleveland also got a much better version of James Harden. Instead of the sloppy possessions that hurt the Cavs earlier in the series, Harden looked settled and useful as a creator. His 24 points and 11 assists gave Mitchell the support he needed and made Cleveland's offense feel far less predictable.

Detroit now has real questions. Cade Cunningham did not have his usual command of the game, and Cleveland's pressure clearly bothered him. Jalen Duren was also quiet, which matters because the Pistons need his size and physicality to show up in this matchup.

The series is now down to a best-of-three, and Detroit still gets the next game at home. But Cleveland has found belief again, and Mitchell has raised the standard for everyone else.
