Braves' Walt Weiss Shares Sean Murphy Update After Dodgers Game
The Atlanta Braves are entering the season on a hot streak with a 28-13 record, making them the best team in baseball so far this year. Catcher Sean Murphy has gotten off to a delayed start this season.
Originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft, he is coming off a hip injury from last year and has been hitting below the Mendoza Line in limited action.
The 31-year-old has appeared in four games and posted a .071 batting average, .071 on-base percentage, and .143 OPS. He is part of a lineup that includes first basemanMatt Olson, Michael Harris II, and Dominic Smith, all of whom have been hitting exceptionally well this season.
During Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Murphy struggled at the plate, going 0-for-3 overall.
After being struck on the hand/finger by Hyeseong Kim's bat during a catcher's interference play, he exited in the seventh inning of the game. He was replaced by catcher Drake Baldwin, who went 1-for-4 with one RBI in relief.
According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Murphy underwent an X-ray on his finger, and manager Walt Weiss said he should be fine overall. Bowman added that the results will not be available until Tuesday.

Murphy's injury comes shortly after returning from a previous injured list stint due to a hip issue, leaving the team to decide whether to continue managing his health or pursue a high-end replacement.
This follows a strong 2023 season with the Braves, when he earned an All-Star selection after previously winning a Gold Glove with the Athletics in 2021. He is currently in the middle of a six-year, $73 million contract extension with Atlanta, signed in 2023.
Continued health concerns for Murphy could push the Braves to explore trade options ahead of the deadline.
