Kansas State basketball transfer Abdi Bashir isn’t switching sides in the Sunflower Showdown rivalry.

Bashir, a 6-foot-7 junior guard who averaged 13.2 points and made 44.4% of his shots from 3-point range last season with the Wildcats, will continue his college hoops career at LSU.

Bashir committed to the SEC program on Friday after receiving interest from KU coach Bill Self in the transfer portal earlier this month.

The Jayhawks set up a Zoom call with Bashir to explore the possibility of him transferring to Kansas. He was an interesting recruiting target for Self, given his weaknesses on defense. But there was no doubt that Bashir could have provided KU with outside shooting next season.

Things didn’t work out there, though. Bashir also received interest from St. John’s, Ohio State and North Carolina State before he settled on LSU.

Bashir held a Zoom call with NC State after he spoke with KU. That connection would have made since with former K-State assistant Matthew Driscoll now coaching with the Wolfpack.

Instead, Bashir will take his talents to Baton Rouge, where he will play for Will Wade next season.

Bashir is an Omaha native who began his college basketball career at Monmouth. After two high-scoring seasons there, he transferred to K-State and played in 18 games for the Wildcats. He averaged 13.2 points, 2.3 assists and 2.2 rebounds during his lone season at K-State.

He made 67 shots from 3-point range in a purple uniform before his season was cut short due to a broken foot.
