Forza Horizon 6: Features, Early Access and Start Times - Here's What to Know

It's the month of May, and for racing fans, it's about to go down. A new chapter is arriving after a long wait since 2021, and this one is bringing a major shift in both scale and experience. From a fully realized Japan setting to expanded multiplayer systems and deeper customization, the next Horizon Festival is clearly aiming to push the series forward in a meaningful way.

Forza Horizon 6 centers everything around Japan, and that starts with the world itself. Players will explore a map inspired by real locations, including Tokyo's downtown with Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower, alongside legendary driving routes like the C1 loop and mountain passes such as Mt. Haruna.

Seasons return with more dramatic variation, and the addition of year-round snow in alpine regions introduces new driving conditions regardless of the current season.

A More Connected Open World

The shared world is evolving into something more seamless and social than before:

  • Instant meetups - drive up and join live players with no loading screens
  • Car Meets - show off builds, download tunes and even purchase other players' cars
  • Drag Meets - 12-player open world drag racing events
  • Time Attack Circuits - new lap-based challenges with XP and Credit rewards

This shift makes the world feel more alive, with players constantly interacting instead of sitting in menus.

New Events and Progression Systems

A new event type is also being introduced with a stronger focus on skill:

  • Horizon Rush - obstacle course-style challenges across unique locations
  • Wristbands return - progression system tied to unlocking events
  • Horizon Legend path - complete events to climb toward top status

This adds a layer beyond traditional racing and pushes variety in gameplay.

Customization and Car Culture Expansion

Customization is getting one of its biggest upgrades yet:

  • Customizable garages - full showroom-style design control
  • The Estate - build and decorate directly in the open world
  • Community sharing - download and visit other player creations
  • Horizon CoLab - build with up to 12 players in EventLab

On the car side, there's more depth than ever:

  • Aftermarket Cars - rare vehicles found in the world, often discounted
  • Window liveries - highly requested feature finally added - customize car windows with decals and designs, adding a new layer to vehicle personalization
  • Split rim customization - different front and rear setups
  • Updated Forza Aero
  • Cosmetic tire wear - cars visually evolve as you drive

Driving, Audio and Immersion Upgrades

The on-road experience is getting meaningful improvements:

  • Car Proximity Radar - better awareness in close racing situations
  • 540-degree steering animations - enhanced cockpit realism
  • Improved surface interaction - more responsive driving feel

Audio also takes a big leap forward:

  • New engine recordings with turbo and backfire detail
  • Triton Acoustics system for realistic environmental reverb
  • Seasonal field recordings to match Japan's changing landscapes

Platform Features and Cross-Play Support

The ecosystem side is just as important this time around:

  • Cross-play and cross-save across Xbox, PC, PlayStation and Steam
  • Xbox Play Anywhere support with shared progress and DLC
  • Compatibility with Windows handheld devices like ROG Ally
  • Seamless progression no matter where you play
