The Lady Spartans Fell to Manhattan in Road Doubleheader
Emporia High School softball dipped below .500 Friday, falling to 6A Manhattan in a road doubleheader.
The Lady Spartans lost 4-1 in game one and 13-2 in the second feature.
The opening contest began promising for Emporia, as Alivia Barrett ripped a triple at the top of the first and scored a run. However, it concluded there, as the Spartans weren't able to score again, despite logging six hits.
Barrett led her team on offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a scored run.
In game two, the fifth inning was the turning point as Manhattan recorded nine runs on seven hits, sealing the contest. Spartan Molly Sewell went 1-for-2, belting a triple and driving in a run.
The Emporia defense committed a total of nine errors on the day.
The Lady Spartans visit Iola Friday. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
Burlington 17, Southern Lyon County 4
Burlington handed SLC its first loss of the season last Thursday, moving them to 10-1.
Burlington scored first, putting four runs on the board in the top of the second. They added to that score in the fourth, producing nine runs and an insurmountable 13-1 lead.
For SLC, Gaby Coughlin jacked a three-run homer over the left-field fence, bringing in three runs.
Reece Johnson hit a triple, driving in a run. From the circle, pitcher Adriana Weeden had an uncharacteristic performance, allowing 14 hits and giving up 13 earned runs over seven innings.
SLC plays at Chase County Tuesday. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
