Newland Headlines Spartans Track and Field with Two Golds in Solid Day at Leitel Legacy Invite
In what has been a good season for the Spartans' track and field teams, they turned in yet another solid showing at Free State High in Lawrence to continue the good season. The boys' team ended the day tied for tenth place, while the Lady Spartans placed seventh overall at the Leitel Legacy Invite.
Headlining the Lady Spartans was Paige Newland, who continues to deliver exceptional outings in the jumps with two golds in both the triple jump and the long jump. They also had a handful of third-place finishes as Madison Evans took bronze in the 3200-meter run, Kaylee DeWitt took bronze in the 100-meter hurdles, and Morgan McCoy earned bronze in the discus throw. The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Harley Smith, Allison Aeschliman, Newland, and DeWitt tacked on another bronze finish to close out a strong day for the Lady Spartans.
The boys' team had some key standouts, which included Cohen Bloomquist getting the bronze in the pole vault. Xaden Delgado added a fourth-place finish in the 3200-meter run, and Ben Collins had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles to round out the day for the Spartans.
The team will return to action on May 1 as they travel to Shawnee Heights looking to continue building a strong season.
