Lakers' JJ Redick Announces Luka Doncic Update Before Rockets Game

The Los Angeles Lakers' postseason begins Saturday under less-than-ideal circumstances. Their first-round series against Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets was always expected to be competitive, but the Lakers face a bigger hurdle due to a wave of injuries.

Luka Doncic remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a left hamstring strain, while Austin Reaves is dealing with an oblique injury that has also ruled him out for the opener.

Alongside LeBron James, the trio formed the backbone of the Lakers' offense this season. But without Doncic and Reaves, the Lakers enter Game 1 shorthanded both in scoring and in ball-handling.

There was, however, a measured sense of optimism from inside the organization on the eve of the game.

According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, head coach JJ Redick said he spoke with Luka Doncic after the guard returned to Los Angeles, noting that he was "in good spirits."

Redick added that he is looking forward to having Doncic around the group for Game 1, even as his on-court return remains uncertain.

Doncic has been central to everything the Lakers have done this season. He is averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, leading the NBA in scoring while ranking among the top playmakers in the league.

In the interim, the responsibility to lead the offense shifts to James. The veteran forward remains the Lakers' most experienced postseason presence, and his ability to control pace, create efficient looks, and organize the offense will be critical against a disciplined Houston side.

Game 1 between Los Angeles and Houston is set for 8:30 pm ET on ABC.
