LIV Golf Calls 'Emergency Meeting' Amid Shutdown Rumors
For several years the LIV Golf tour has presented itself as a rival and alternative to the PGA Tour, offering massive salaries to some of the world's top golfers while holding events at many venues the PGA Tour doesn't. But in the wake of a surprise meeting being held among the top officials, the organization's future is now in question.
According to The Telegraph, all of the LIV Golf executives took a sudden trip to Manhattan for an "emergency summit" with no reason being provided.
The announcement came one day after the Monday Q Info golf account on X noted that "a bombshell announcement on LIV's future is imminent."
Ryan French, who runs the account, stated on X Spaces last night that he has heard from insider sources that LIV Golf is, in fact, shutting down.
"Ive heard from multiple sources that a bombshell announcement on LIVs future is imminent. We don't give out gambling advice but If your're a prediction market type person I would bet the under of whatever they have posted," the account posted.
However, this claim has not been corroborated by anyone at LIV Golf, nor have the golfers on the tour made any indications that their plans for the ongoing tour will not continue as scheduled.
Fan response
Golf fans on X don't seem all that bothered by the possibility of LIV Golf shutting down though. A good portion of fans at least in response to this move are downright hoping for it and already thinking about how the PGA Tour should make inroads to bringing the talent back:
"So I'm taking this as they are closing shop. So let's get to the bigger questions, Does PGA open their doors and welcome everyone back? I mean they damn near HAVE to bring Rahm and Bryson back. But what about the La Sasso's? Do they get Korn Ferry invites?" one user mused on X.
"Would be in line with why Sergio was so upset when he was already way out of it. Maybe he knew that it actually meant something regarding his future," another remarked.
"Are we going to wake up to the greatest day in golf twitter history?" a third joked.
LIV Golf has been a controversial organization from the get go mostly due to its close ties to the highly controversial Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF). The organization has been accused of cozying up to the Saudi government, and by extension aligning itself with a regime that has a rather spotty human rights record.
These concerns have largely been dismissed by the organization's executives and many of the golfers who partake in it.
If LIV Golf does collapse, as some now expect or even hope, it will be interesting to see if any of the narratives around it change afterwards.
