Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self, who has referred to himself as a Chiefs fan in the past, said it’s “awesome” the team has decided to move to Kansas from its Arrowhead Stadium home in Missouri starting with the 2031 NFL season.
“Well, I’m not politically connected at all, but I think it’s awesome to get them here,” Self said, specifically asked by a Kansas City Star reporter about Monday’s Chiefs announcement during his postgame news conference held after a 90-61 victory over Davidson at Allen Fieldhouse.
Self continued.
“I also think it’s pretty amazing — and I’m not politically connected nor do I have a real opinion about it at all — but it seems like in the last four or five years there’s been a lot of good things happen to Kansas,” Self said. “ I mean with businesses moving here and all this stuff, and I think that’s a credit to our leadership, obviously the governor. So I think it’s fantastic. I’m excited about it, which I think all Kansas should be excited about it.
“I’m sure there’s some people across the state line that probably don’t feel that same sentiment, but you know … I won’t be coaching here (in 2031), so I won’t benefit from it. But the bottom line is — what is it going to be, like six years from now? — so the bottom line is, it’s great for the state. I would think it’s great.”
Regarding Self’s comment that he won’t be coaching at KU when the Chiefs begin play in a new stadium … he turns 63 on Saturday. He has not commented specifically on how many years he’d like to coach in the future.
