Area college football: Northwest Missouri, Pitt State are climbing MIAA standings
The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are 4-0 in MIAA football games and 5-1 overall after taking care of business at Central Missouri on Saturday.
Here are the highlights from KC-area and regional games this week:
Northwest Missouri State 49, Central Missouri 32: The Bearcats rolled in this showdown in Warrensburg between two teams that each came in 3-0 in MIAA play. Northwest Missouri’s Zechariah Owens passed for two touchdowns and ran in four TDs in the victory. Owens had 124 of the Bearcats’ 358 rushing yards. The Mules’ Donovyn Omolo passed for 256 yards with two touchdowns.
Northwest improved to 5-1, 4-0 in conference. Central Missouri dropped to 3-3, 3-1.
Pittsburg State 34, Washburn 10: Quarterback Jackson Berry hooked up with Jaelon Travis for a 73-yard passing touchdown that put Pitt State up 24-7 at the end of the first half in Topeka. Zahmari Palode-Gary, who played at Raytown High, rushed for 156 yards on 27 yards for the Gorillas. Pittsburg State has won five straight and stands 5-1, 4-1 in the MIAA.
Fall is not treating the Ichabods so well. Washburn has lost five straight and is 1-5. The Gorillas held the Ichabods’ run game to 26 yards on 22 carries (1.2 yards per carry)
Emporia State 31, Missouri Southern 24: The Hornets built a 28-7 lead and held on for the win in Emporia despite the Lions’ 17 fourth-quarter points. The Emporia State (3-3) defense smothered the Lions’ rushing game, holding Missouri Southern (2-4) to 44 yards rushing on 31 carries (1.4 yards per carry). Missouri Southern took a 7-0 lead on a 75-yard pass play from quarterback Tillman Martin to Huston Rotich in the first quarter.
Nebraska-Kearney 27, Missouri Western 7: Crew Myers had seven receptions for 71 yards with the Griffons’ only touchdown in the road loss. Missouri Western fell to 1-5, while Nebraska-Kearney pushed its record to 5-2.
.Quincy (Illinois) 34, William Jewell 33, OT: It was the fourth straight loss for the Cardinals, this one in tough fashion in overtime at home in Liberty. William Jewell scored on its one play in OT with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Kubat to Layne Cavanah. But the Cardinals’ Bleu Renfrow missed the point after. Quincy subsequently scored and kicked an extra point for the victory.
Renfrow, though, made a huge 49-yard field goal that tied the score 27-27 and pushed the game to overtime.
Central Oklahoma 21, Fort Hays State 14: Central Oklahoma broke a 14-14 tie in Hays, Kansas, with a fourth-quarter touchdown that proved to be the game-winner. Caleb Heavner completed 18 of 37 passes for 212 yards with a touchdown for Fort Hays State, which dropped to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the MIAA. Central Oklahoma is 2-3, 2-2.
Northeastern State (Okla.) 52, Lincoln 3: Leroy Tellis had 10 tackles for the Blue Tigers in the home loss in Jefferson City. Lincoln has lost four straight games.
Missouri State 22, Middle Tennessee 20: In a Wednesday game, Missouri State picked up it first league win in Conference USA. Yousef Obeid kicked a 25-yard field goal with just over four minutes remaining to put the Bears up for good in Murfreesboo, Tennessee. Missouri State is 3-3 overall, 1-1 in conference.
