Area college football: Missouri State, Pittsburg State, Benedictine roll to wins
Here’s a look at area college football scores and performances from Saturday.
Missouri State 42, UT-Martin 10: The Bears were pitching a 42-0 shutout but surrendered 10 points late in the win in Springfield, Missouri. Missouri State quarterback Jacob Clark passed for 271 yards with three touchdowns. Dash Luke had one of those TDs and finished with 110 yards receiving. The Bears improved to 2-2. UT-Martin is 0-4.
Pittsburg State 31, Fort Hays State 16: The Gorillas scored 21 fourth-quarter points to earn the victory in Pittsburg, Kansas. Pitt State (2-2) took a 17-16 lead in the fourth-quarter on a 78-yard pass play from Jackson Berry to Greyson Holbert. Donavan Hunt rushed for 76 yards on eight carries for Fort Hays State (2-2).
Nebraska-Kearney 34, Emporia State 20: At Kearney, Nebraska, Isaiah Harris ran for 269 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries as host Nebraska-Kearney (2-1) did most of its damage via the ground game. Ben Harris (no relation) quarterbacked ESU (1-2) to three TDs but was sacked three times.
Northwest Missouri State 21, Missouri Southern 14: Te’Shaun Porter ran for 98 yards on 20 carries for the Bearcats. His second touchdown put Northwest Missouri up 14-7. Northwest improved to 3-1. Missouri Southern, meanwhile, lost its first on the season and sits at 2-1.
Southwest Baptist 29, William Jewell 19: MicahJo Barnett rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries for William Jewell, but the Cardinals dropped their first game of the season, this one at home in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. Both teams are 2-1 on the season.
Central Missouri 34, Missouri Western, 26: Central Missouri picked up its first victory of the season with the hard-earned win at MIAA rival Missouri Western in St. Joseph. Mules QB Jordan Pachot passed for 401 yards with three touchdowns. Pachot also had a rushing TD. Gyasi Smith pulled in four passes for 107 yards for the Griffons. Both teams are 1-2.
Quincy 24, Lincoln 21: Lincoln came in at 2-0 but ended up just short of a third straight win with this loss in Jefferson City, Missouri. Jareese Howard ran his way to 73 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown for Lincoln.
Central Oklahoma 34, Washburn 28: Chase Allen-Jackman scored on an 85-yard pass play for a TD that put the Ichabods up 28-24 in the third Quarter, but the Bronchos rallied for the home win in Edmond, Oklahoma. Allen-Jackman had five catched for 118 yards with two touchdowns.
Benedictine 48, Clarke (Iowa) 10: Ravens quarterback Jackson Dooley passed for 422 yards with five touchdown in the blowout victory in Dubuque, Iowa. Tanner Zimmerman scored on an 82-yard pass play that put the Ravens up 41-3 in the third quarter. Zimmerman finished with 155 yards receiving on three catches.
William Penn (Iowa) 34, MidAmerica Nazarene 31: William Penn was the winner in this battle between unbeatens in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Pioneers quarterback Drew Miller completed 25 of 39 passes for 202 yards with two touchdowns, but he also was picked off twice. MidAmerica Nazarene fell to 3-1. William Penn improved to 4-0.
Grand View 24, Baker 7: At Baldwin City, Kansas, the visitors from Iowa led 21-0 after one period and never looked back. Baker, 0-3 for the first time since 2010, got its lone TD from Truman Juelsgaard on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. Jackson Waring passed for a pair of TDs for Grand View (3-0).
Saint Mary 48, Avila 19: The Spires picked up their first win of the season with the victory in Kansas City. Saint Mary is 1-3, while Avila dropped to 0-4. Saint Mary’s Michael Graham picked off a pass and took it 35 yards for a TD in the third quarter. Michael Gazzana caught five balls for 141 yards with a touchdown for Saint Mary. Avila’s Quentin Curtis rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries with a TD.
Southwestern College 61, Ottawa 10: The Braves (2-2) were unable to slow down Southwestern College in the home loss. Southwestern put up 651 yards of total offense. Jayden Johnson caught three passes for 63 yards for Ottawa.
