Missouri State football beats Marshall Thundering Herd for first FBS victory
The Missouri State Bears are taking well to their new neck of the woods in the Conference USA and Football Bowl Subdivision — at least a win at Marshall on Saturday would seem to suggest.
But there were some other area teams that picked up big victories on Saturday as well. Here’s a list of area college football scores:
Missouri State 21, Marshall 20: Missouri State QB Jacob Clark found Jeron Askren for an 8-yard TD with 2 minutes, 12 seconds remaining, and the touchdown gave the Bears the victory over Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia. It was Missouri State’s first victory over an FBS (or top-tier Division-I) team since 1990. With the win, Missouri State bounced back from a season-opening 73-13 loss at USC. The Bears on Saturday outgained the Thundering Herd 474 yards to 274.
Northwest Missouri State 34, Washburn 7: Jordan Pigram harassed Ichabods QB Justin Lewis for three of the Bearcats’ seven sacks in the dominant performance in Topeka. Northwest beat Washburn for a fourth straight time. D.J. Bell went for a 69-yard touchdown on a pass from Lewis that was the Ichabods’ only score.
Missouri Southern 38, Southwest Baptist 31: Missouri Southern built a 28-17 lead by the half and held on for the road win in Bolivar, Missouri. Tillman Martin threw for 446 yards with four TDs. for Missouri Southern.
Angelo State (Texas) 41, Emporia State 20: The Emporia State Hornets fell behind 21-0 early in Texas and could not catch up. Emporia State was coming off a 27-7 victory over Minot State last week.
Central Oklahoma 27 Pittsburg State 24: Central Oklahoma’s fourth-quarter field goal was the difference in this MIAA showdown in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Pittsburg State Gorillas are 0-2 to start the season.
Lincoln 27, Lane College (Tennessee) 15: The Blue Tigers are 2-0 for the first time since 1972. Justin Cooks’ 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put Lincoln back in front 20-15 in the fourth quarter.
MidAmerica Nazarene 47, Culver-Stockton 28: Pioneers QB Drew Miller threw for 288 yards with two TDs in the home victory in Olathe.
Fort Hays State 36, CSU-Pueblo (Colorado) 35: On Thursday, Fort Hays State topped No. 5 CSU-Pueblo by blocking the extra-point attempt after CSU-Pueblo scored on a TD with 27 seconds left in Pueblo, Colorado. Fort Hays State trailed 22-7 late in the first half.
Grand View (Iowa) 27, Benedictine 24: Benedictine outgained Grand View 436 yards to 303, but three turnovers were costly for the Ravens: two interceptions and a fumble and each on third down. Tanner Zimmerman (an Olathe West graduate) caught five passes for 90 yards, including a 60-yard TD for Benedictine.
Friends 62, Avila 7: Avila’s Seth Myers scored the Eagles’ lone touchdown in their home opener on a 21-yard pass play from Duce Taylor. Friends got to Avila quarterbacks for eight sacks.
Ottawa 35, Saint Mary 27: Braves receiver De’Anthony Curtis hauled in nine passes for 178 yards, including a TD on a 65-yard pass play that put Ottawa up 26-21 in Ottawa, Kansas. Saint Mary’s Michael Gazzana caught six passes for 131 yards, including a 75-yard TD play. Gazzana had two scores in the game.
Peru State (Nebraska) 31, Baker 7: Baker quarterback Truman Juelsgaard ran for 55 yards and passed for 187, but he threw four interceptions in the loss at Peru, Nebraska.
