It’s hard to imagine the Kansas State football team playing a home game without Frank Tracz leading the marching band onto the field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
But, for the first time in more than three decades, someone else will have that job next season.
Tracz, who arrived in Manhattan in 1993, has announced that this will be his final season as director of bands for the Wildcats. He plans to retire after spending the past 33 years leading “The Pride of Wildcat Land.”
He shared his decision with the K-State marching band on Tuesday night in an emotional speech that has been shared on social media.
“There are few things in my life that mean more to me than this band,” Tracz said. “My wife, my kids, my grandson and then this band. That’s it. This is the right decision. I have thought about this a long time. After 33 years, this is going to be my last year.”
He explained why now is the right time for him to step aside.
“I am physically beat up, and hit hurts to do this,” he said. “But I have got one year left in me and this is going to be the best one. I am going to have fun every (darn) time I am in front of you.”
Tracz said he began informing friends of his plans this month. The first person he told was former K-State football coach Bill Snyder, who told him that retirement is “going to be hard at first, but you’re going to like it.” He then told current football coach Chris Klieman and other leaders across the university.
His departure from the K-State marching band will be significant for Klieman. He is a huge fan of both Tracz and the band for all the support they provide for the Wildcats. So much so, that he applauded both after K-State defeated Rutgers at the Rate Bowl last year in Phoenix.
“I’m going to give a shout out to the pride, the K-State marching band and Dr. Tracz,” Klieman said. “You’re the best. Those folks drove 20 hours to get here and cheer these guys on. We can’t thank you enough.”
Tracz worked his first K-State football game in 1993 when Snyder was in charge of the program. Over the years, he led the K-State marching as the Wildcats played in 27 bowl games and won three Big 12 championships.
He was skeptical about working for K-State when the job was available more than three decades ago, mostly because the Wildcats lacked football tradition at the time and his peers told him to look elsewhere. But he took a leap of faith.
“My gut told me,” Tracz said, “I should do this.”
That decision worked out well for him. All these years later, he is ready for a farewell tour.
