KC Mavericks cooled off last week, but December could provide a big opportunity
The Kansas City Mavericks went 1-2-0 this past week as the team prepares for an East Coast road trip with December approaching.
Wednesday marked the Mavericks’ final game of a three-game stand at Tulsa. After scoring the first two goals of the game, Tulsa came back with three unanswered to send the Mavericks back to Kansas City with a 3-2 loss.
Then came a trip back home to Cable Dahmer Arena on Black Friday. More than 4,100 fans packed the barn as the Mavericks faced longtime rival Wichita. A quick goal from rookie Max Andreev gave KC an early lead, but Wichita answered to tie the score heading into the second period.
Wichita added a second goal less than a minute into the second period. From then on, it was all Kansas City.
Four-straight goals from Kyle Jackson, team captain Jake Jaremko, Nolan Walker and Jacob Hayhurst gave the Mavericks a 5-2 victory and their fourth straight win over Wichita. Eleven different Mavericks skaters recorded at least one point in the win.
Andreev’s goal on Friday gave the Moscow native at least one point in 15 of the Mavericks’ 16 games at the time.
Saturday’s game was not as kind to Kansas City. Another high-scoring affair saw the Mavericks pick up their first loss against Wichita this season.
Continuing his hot stretch for the Mavericks on Saturday was Jacob Hayhurst, who scored a goal in his second straight game. However, Wichita tied the game up 30 seconds after Hayhurst got the Mavericks on the board.
Back-to-back goals by Wichita, followed by back-to-back goals from the Mavericks, made the second period plenty busy. And Wichita scored with eight seconds remaining in the period to take a one-goal lead.
An early third-period goal from Jaremko evened the score, until two unanswered goals by Wichita gave the Thunder the victory. Kansas City is 4-1-0 against Wichita through the first two months of the season.
Kansas City currently sits at 13-4-0 (26 points) with the third-most victories in the ECHL.
