KC Mavericks open their 15th season on Friday. Here’s what you need to know

The Kansas City Mavericks open their 15th season of professional hockey on Friday at the Wichita Thunder before returning to Cable Dahmer Arena on Saturday, October 21, at 6:05 p.m. for the team’s home opener.

After increasing their win total in each of the last four seasons, as well as making their first postseason appearance since the 2018-19 season, the Mavericks are looking to build off of last season’s success.

General manager and head coach Tad O’Had begins his fourth season behind the bench and is joined by Riley Weselowski who enters his first season as the team’s associate coach after his promotion from assistant coach. New to the coaching staff this year is Rob Couturier, the goaltending and video coach. Couturier comes to Kansas City after spending the previous two seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

The Mavericks are entering their second season as an affiliate of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken and AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds. The relationship flourished last season, with Mavericks players spending more than 400 combined days playing one level up in the AHL. All three organizations saw a successful 2022-23, with each franchise making their respective postseasons.

Halloween Game

The Mavericks are starting off their first month with a bang. The team is hosting a special Halloween game on Oct. 31 with more than 20 local vendors and partners passing out candy for trick-or-treaters inside the concourse at Cable Dahmer Arena. Fans are encouraged to come dressed in costume to compete in the Mavericks’ costume contest for the game against the Rapid City Rush.

Promotional nights

In addition to the Halloween game, the Mavericks are hosting a litany of other theme nights throughout the season. Saturday marks the team’s annual Opening Night Barn Party, complete with a petting zoo and face painters inside. Events later in the season include Kids Day Game, Star Wars Night, Military Appreciation Game, New Year’s Eve Game and more.
