The basketball coaching searches at Kansas State and Missouri came to an end this week, and in today’s new episode of the SportsBeat KC podcast The Star’s beat writers take us through the hiring process at each school.

Kellis Robinett describes the path to Manhattan of Jerome Tang, a Baylor assistant coach for 19 years. Tang has never been a college head coach, but he was part of the Scott Drew staff that transformed the Bears from also-rans to national champions.

Lila Bromberg breaks down the hire of Dennis Gates at Mizzou. Gates went 50-40 over three seasons at Cleveland State and spent eight years on Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State, helping the Seminoles become an ACC power.

Both coaches take over programs that finished under .500 this season. And recruiting is a high priority for each man. They’re on the hunt for new talent and must also re-recruit guys who played on this season’s rosters.
