The Kansas City Comets’ return to Cable Dahmer Arena last weekend was a successful one, as the home indoor-soccer team beat the Dallas Sidekicks 9-4 in Independence.

The Comets (9-1) were coming off a 9-2 victory over the Tacoma Stars at the T-Mobile Center, but it was Dallas (5-7) that came out strong to start Saturday evening’s game.

The Sidekicks took an early lead, but the Comets turned in a stellar second half to collect the win and put additional distance between themselves and their MASL Central Division rivals from the Lone Star State.

Breaking it open

The Comets outshot the Sidekicks 15-7 during Saturday’s opening half, but it was 3-3 at halftime.

“We’ve had a lot of chances on goal,” Comets assistant and goalkeeper coach Alan Mayer said at the intermission, “so we are going to keep doing what we are doing. We’ve controlled a lot of the play so far.”

Sure enough, the Comets came out firing in the second half. They scored four straight goals in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to put away the visitors.

“We started off pretty slow,” said KC’s Ray Lee, who had a goal and three assists in the second half. “During halftime we got together and changed our mentality, came out more aggressive, made some plays and ended up with the win.”

Lee now has five goals and eight assists this season. And Comets player/coach Leo Gibson kept up his torrid scoring pace with two goals and an assist.

Pink Game vs. Chihuahua

The Comets do not play this weekend. Their next game is at Cable Dahmer Arena on Feb. 12 against the Chihuahua Savage, who will have played the Ambush in St. Louis the night before.

The game against the Savage (1-5-2) is the Comets’ annual Pink Game, a fund-raiser for promoting breast cancer research. The players’ special pink jerseys will be available through a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com. Groups of 10 or more may call the Comets at 888-9-COMETS.
