KC Comets update: Kansas City’s indoor soccer team is red-hot entering game vs. Blast
Here’s what going on with the Kansas City Comets MASL indoor soccer team this week.
Still undefeated
The Comets (3-0) maintained their unbeaten streak to start the 2021-22 season last Saturday, beating the Dallas Sidekicks 6-4.
Dallas took the lead in the first quarter, but the Comets fought back, dominating the middle two periods. The Comets outscored Dallas 5-1 in those two quarters before cruising to victory in the fourth. Player/coach Leo Gibson led the way with three goals and an assist while second-year player Lucas Sousa added two goals and team captain John Sosa chipped in a goal and an assist.
The Comets top the Central Division with a 3-0 record and have outscored their opposition 23-14.
Baltimore Blast visit Sunday
The Comets host the Baltimore Blast this Sunday at 4 p.m. at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Baltimore is a longstanding rival and the two clubs have played many fierce games through the years.
The Blast are currently in second place in the MASL’s East Division at 2-1 and are fresh off of a 6-5 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Wave. Lucas Roque leads the Blast with six goals and three assists.
Santa and Toys for Tots
Baltimore will not be the only visitor at Cable Dahmer Arena on Sunday. The Comets plan to have Santa Claus on hand to take pictures with fans. The team will also be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots drive again, and has some special holiday festivities planned for Sunday, as well.
Scoring leader
Gibson, the 38-year-old forward who also coaches the Comets, leads the league in scoring. He tops the tally for total points (11), goals (8) and game-winning goals (2) and is tied for second in assists (3). He had planned on playing fewer minutes this season, but with a few players unavailable, this ageless wonder is setting the pace once again.
