This year’s Big 12 Tournament ended March 11. The next major sporting event in Kansas City will happen this week, 134 days later.

The Super Start Battery 400 presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts is Thursday at Kansas Speedway. No fans will be in the stands for the race, which originally was scheduled for May 31 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With five races over three days, this week’s NASCAR visit should provide some economic boost for the region. On this episode of The Star’s daily SportsBeat KC podcast, Kansas Speedway president Pat Warren chats with host Blair Kerkhoff about racing’s return to the local track and where the sport goes from here.

After a break, we’ll continue Monday’s conversation with Chiefs coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach — Veach addresses Chris Jones’ value as a versatile player and Reid details what to expect during the first few days of training camp.
