Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC statement: ‘We can’t wait to compete for you again soon’
It’s a historically quiet time for sports, but Kansas City’s pro teams led a cheer through the city’s sports commission Friday.
“In challenging times like these, it can be difficult to fill the void left by seasons put on hold and events canceled,” the Chiefs, Royals and Sporting KC said in a joint statement circulated by the Kansas City Sports Commission. “When life returns to normal, we will gather together again in solidarity and in celebration of Kansas City, our teams, our fans — more united than ever.”
Under a banner headline — “Sports unite us. Sports inspire us. Sports create connection & community,” the commission struck an uplifting tone.
“The Cauldron will chant again. KC will be the College Basketball Capital of American again. Salvy will splash again. The sea of red will return to Arrowhead and Mahomes will break records again. In the meantime, take care of each other, be safe and considerate. Our thoughts are with our family of fans and we can’t wait to compete for you again soon.”
The statement included the logos of the Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC and the Kansas City Sports Commission.
Kansas City was the site of one of the first major events to shut down because of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The Big 12 Tournament at Sprint Center was canceled Thursday, March 12, the same day other major conference tournaments were canceled. That was a day after the NBA stopped its season and a day before the NCAA Tournament was called off.
Since then, all major sporting events in America and around the globe have shut down. Many have extended their original suspension dates, citing a CDC guideline that recommends delaying events of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks. Major League Baseball said its season won’t start until mid-May.
Major League Soccer, which had started it season — Sporting KC was off to a 2-0 start — said it will wait until at least May 10 to resume competition.
The sports commission has also postponed the Kansas City Triathlon, scheduled for May 17.
